“Dear future student,”

PRACTICING:

300 words only, addressed to future student

Due in 17 minutes

Research paper do’s and don’ts, mistakes and successes.

Dear future student,

In your 1020 English class, your research will be very important. One major key to doing any research paper would be to not procrastinate. A research paper is not something you want to wait till the last minute to do because doing good research does take time. Once you know what your paper will be about, start doing research. This allows you to really be able to thoroughly research your topic the way you would need to. Another tip I can give you is to pick a topic you are interested in. Nothing stinks more than doing research on something you could care less about. Also, if you choose a topic you are not interested in, you are more than likely not going to spend as much time on it and this could lead you to a bad grade. You do not want that. You also need to try and not miss class, especially on peer review days. Peer reviews are a really big help, believe it or not. Not going to a peer review is one mistake that I made during my research paper. Do not make that same mistake; however, if you ever do miss a peer review, get up with someone in your class and ask them to look over your paper. This helps because it lets you know if other people understand what you are talking about, lets you know if there are things you need to fix, and lets you know if you are on the right track. Another thing would be to do your blogs, something I did not entirely do. Believe it or not, they make the process of doing your research paper a lot easier because usually you are writing something that you can put directly into your research paper. I wish you the best of luck in your 1020 class.  ffff

Blog 16(this past weekend)

Write a conclusion. Don’t get too tired to do it. Be aware of what we call the act II problem.

Be careful w/ idea of loaded gun. If you put something in your paper early on, it needs to matter later on.

Engl 1010- write an informative essay about something you know.

A student wrote about cooking, but her thesis was about men cooking and equal rights for women. The paper though, was about cooking spaghetti.

In this document I will show you how to make my grandmother’s recipe and succeed at making family gatherings fun.

Blog 17- reminder that we practiced format on Tues and you wrote a paragraph.

Example of loaded gun:

Use research.  You cite it well. Then… NO WORKS CITED PAGE. This helps me follow your trail.

Do NOT simply leave me a list of websites on a final page.

Take out sources on the list that you did NOT use. If you use a source, you have to introduce the author

According to Josh Marshall who wrote Camping Out, camping is not for “babies” (13).

Reminders about conclusions:

High school- summarize thesis and main points

College- restate thesis, admit that more research needs to be done because we still don’t have all the answers, imagine a future where your solution plays a big role

Why is my group the best?

As a group, we feel as if we’re the best fit for this situation against The Walking Dead because Tariq and I would be the muscle of the group to escape and fight off zombies while Bri would be the mastermind behind it all. As being The Whisperers’, we actually clone the dead including wearing masks designed by the actual faces of the zombies and use such disguise to walk among them to blend in.

Circus in The Streets

“Lions and tigers and bears, oh my,” this quote from The Wizard of Oz is one of very few quotes that fits well with the topic of this paper. The way Dorothy startled and a little freaked out when she ran into the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion is the same way any right-minded person would react if they were to see a lion, tiger, or bear. Especially if they were to see one while walking down the road, or even getting the mail.

Imagine waking up one day and turning on the news just to see a bunch of chaos going on in your city. Now, imagine the chaos being zoo animals that have escaped. In some cases, this could be considered an apocalyptic situation. What do you do in a situation like this? Where do you go? How do you stay safe? How are the animals going to be caught, without getting hurt? What can be done to prevent this from happening again? All the solutions to these questions will be answered throughout the course of this paper.

Body Paragraphs

How is a paragraph in 1020 different from one in 1010? You build you paragraphs by “entering into conversation” with a source you’ve read. It’s not as simple as throwing a quote or citation into the paragraph. You DO use your own voice.

Review: Start with a main point you want to make. Explain that point clearly. (comes from you.) Then provide EVIDENCE that the point is true. (use the research) Conclude.with something that links you to the next paragraph. (a transition sentence).

SEE BLOG FOUR!!!! An email to a friend going to Chernobyl.

Group Assignment: Write down five examples of authors of research papers entering conversation with their sources.

Yambor, Alexandra Sasha. “Writing Center Tutors and Students with Learning Disabilities: Perceptions, Feelings, and Tutoring Strategies.” Queen City Writers, 16 Apr. 2016, qc-writers.com/2016/04/15/997/.

First, because since the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, colleges and universities are obliged to enhance the accessibility of higher education for students with many kinds of disabilities, increasing the numbers of students with disabilities who are enrolled in American colleges and universities.

One of the themes that arose in the interviews was that a number of tutors stated that they felt frustrated during the session, but they realized that they needed to be patient with the students. Maureen stated that she needs to always be “really patient and mindful—definitely mindful” of what the student is going through and how she can use the strategies that she has access to in order to best help. Marie shared her feelings of frustration, saying, “I was just kind of frustrated because I was like is this person like fooling with me like are they trying to just get me to do their work for them.”

Throughout my research I found more tutors who felt discomfort about working with students with learning disabilities than I found tutors who expressed comfort or confidence. Tutors expressed feelings of frustration when it came to working with these students because they felt as though they did not have access to the specialized knowledge needed to work with this population of students.

I found that the tutors like Maureen had a mix of the “continuum” view and the “distinctly different” view. On one hand, the tutors recognized the differences; on the other hand, they also felt they were able to support the student by employing different tutoring approaches.

This study showed me that tutor training should more thoroughly explore contemporary views of learning disabilities, emphasizing the perception of the continuum of ability to help tutors gain another level of understanding in regard to students with learning disabilities.

Ever since the animals escaped from the zoo, things have been extremely crazy around here. Everyone is scared for their life because no one is sure when this chaos will be over with. The animals are roaming all over the city, literally. While some are just curious and having fun, there are others that really destroy everything they touch. There have been several people injured and many casualties since the animals have escaped. Some people have taken shelter at the Greyhound Bus Station and others have tried to just evacuate the city all together. Law enforcement has called in the National Guard for backup so hopefully everything gets under control soon.

When we started this project, I honestly had no idea where to even begin. However, once I got started, it wasn’t all that bad. First, I had to do some research and find good, credible sources. Then, I had to come up with a thesis, which was actually kind of hard for me. Next, I did my annotated bibliography. Once I got started, this part actually did not take me as long as I though it would. After doing my bibliography, I did my outline. This part was pretty easy considering I know how to do outlines, or at least I think I do. Finally, I looked over all my work three times and even asked a friend to look over it before I turned it in. Yes, I did stay up late, more than one night, to do this project. No, I did not mind it because I know I did the best I could and I worked hard on this project. I will get the grade I earned, not the grade I deserve.

Spring Break Blog

• Use research and sources to—

-To provide background info on the topic -To support your point or your examples/ to give evidence

-To argue against someone’s point

– To prove credibility/prove that you used the iceberg and show off that evidence -To clarify s definition of a word

• Why we should NOT use research—

-Using someone else’s ideas and not your own: This is about YOUR solution to a problem

-Off topic or not relevant to your point

-To fill a page—don’t use long quotations that you paste into the document

• Forms of using research—

-Summarize—share the major points, make it shorter than the original, cite this -Paraphrase—putting someone else’s ideas into your own words, cite this -Quote—taking exact phrases and putting them in quotations

Don’t quote something like this “In 1988 Chernobyl was the worst place to live.” Simple statements do not need to be quoted. You can paraphrase.

• Kyle Stedman “Annoying Ways People Use Sources”

-Armadillo roadkills? What are they?

-Sources are thrown into the paper without intro or explanation.

Flow—Old ideas are then connected to new ideas in a smooth fashion

Points for blogs this week, 5-10

Peer review for annotated bib and outline via email.

Email draft of project to 3 people by Monday night 6 pm

Peer review is Tuesday

10 points for draft and 10 points for workshop.

How to Structure a Large Project

Rules:

  1. Introductions are always longer than one paragraph. If you share too much info too fast, its called a “data dump” SLOW DOWN.  – burger analogy: paper used to be a mcdouble, (bun, burger, bun) intro, body, conclusion.  Now we want a 15$ burger: delux with all the ingredients.

Example : intro paragraph 1: personal connection, story to hook us.

Example : intro paragraph 2: define your terms (insurance against the reader saying they’re confused)

Apacolypse: definition here.

EMP

“In my paper I will be discussing “term” and this is what it means.”

Intro paragraph 3 : thesis parapgraph with subpoints (explain how the document will be organized)

4. BRIDGE: offer a hypothesis or idea of a possible disaster scenario (no more than two paragraphs) ; describe the problem without writing a creative novel

5. **********body paragraphs are the solution ***********

1. describe how the world normally works.

a. water supply comes from x

b. had glitches due to y

2. how the world works after a disaster

a. lack of supply

1. health of people

2. fate of environment

b. ways to fix it.

3. more body paragraphs will be needed, break it down into parts

         Costs, building materials, location studies

****have topic sentences******

5. acknowledge other possibilities to fix the issue/opposing views – who might want to fix this differently ? explanation;

Admit there are multiple ways to solve a problem blah blah blah, brave thing to do, you might not be right.

“other scientists have suggested…”

Conclusion:

Conclusion 1: why your* solution is the best though.

Conclusion 2: call to action, suggest that more research that may need to be done to find an answer. “I did not get the chance to cover…. More research needs to be done for those blah blah blahs” “these are my limits” remind the reader the limits of your scope.

EXAMPLE OF PARALLELISM

“In the morning I have to feed the animals,

Wash the dishes,

Take out the trash,

And be ready for school on time.”

Items must be equal in structure. The same grammar and style is used to make things equal.

BLOG 7.5

Find out the citation of the wolfe article. Put it in MLA style.

Wolfe, Joanne. Rhetorical Numbers. February, 2010.

Joanna Wolfe—use an author’s full name the first time.

Wolfe—use last name after that

Wolfe, Joanna. “Rhetorical Numbers: A Case for Quantitative Writing in the Classroom.” CCC,               vol 61, no 3, 2010, pp. 434-457.

1-2 sentences of summary: state thesis and state how she goes about proving it

2-3 sentences explaining why the source is purposeful and relevant and current to YOUR topic.

Wolfe argues that we should teach quantitative arguments in composition classes. She proposes changes in instruction, textbooks, writing assignments, and instructor training.

CRAAP model can work, but we’re going to ignore the authorship and accuracy part bc we know its peer reviewed and edited well.

We still need to evaluate on currency, relevance, and purpose.

Books go in italics. Journals go in italics.

Ex. Josh Marshall’s Camping Out is a book that I love.

21 Pilots just released an album called Trench. My favorite song is “Jumpsuit.”

Every proposal has roughly the same parts.

Thesis: Joanne Wolfe argues that we need more quantitative instruction in writing classes.

I. The world as it is

A. Numbers are everywhere

B. People Believe Two Things

1.  Numbers are always objective/right

2. Numbers have been cooked

II. The problem with the World

            A. Students don’t get training in this type of rhetoric.

            B. Their teachers don’t want to address it either.

III. The Solution to the Problem

  1. We need to teach students to think of numbers as rhetorical/persuasive.
  2. We need to design assignments to help them practice this.
